On World Environment Day, we reflect on Balasore Alloys' commitment to sustainable growth. This year marks a significant milestone: the successful deployment of India's first electric excavator in chromite mining, alongside expanding environmental initiatives across all operations.
Our EV Mining Milestone
In January, we deployed the LiuGong 922FE Electric Excavator at Kaliapani Chromite Mines. The one-month trial delivered measurable results:
- 28,800 kg of CO2 eliminated in one month
- 58% reduction in operating costs (Rs. 1,104 to Rs. 462/hour)
- 10% increase in productivity (1,105 MT/hour vs. 1,002 MT/hour)
This proves that environmental responsibility and operational efficiency are complementary priorities. We are now scaling with 4-5 additional EV units deploying in 2026-2027. At full capacity, this fleet will prevent 1,728 tonnes of annual CO2 emissions while saving Rs. 2.77 crore. We have built dedicated EV charging infrastructure at Kaliapani and trained operators and mechanics on electric equipment operations.

🍃 Air Quality: Deployed mechanised road sweeping to reduce dust and air pollution.
🌳 Biodiversity & Circular Economy: Cultivating Miyazaki mangos using eco-friendly practices and repurposing mosquito nets for plant protection.
💧 Water Stewardship: Renewed groundwater authorisation for 700 cubic metres daily within our Safe Zone classification, with continuous monitoring.
🛡️ Environmental Compliance: Renewed Hazardous Waste Authorization ensuring zero environmental leakage across all operations.
🏆 Recognition: Our Environment Department received the Global Environment Award 2026 (Gold Winner) for carbon-efficient manufacturing and waste circularity.
