5th June 2013

The Balasore Alloys Ltd has declared the launch of massive greenery drive for environment protection. The new drive christened as “Living Greener”, is going to be drive for improving greenery in Balasore district and the company will plant 30,000 trees in this financial year.

The new drive was launched by Mr S V Bhabani Varma, vice president (Operation) in presence of Dr A A K Chatterjee, Regional Officer, Odisha Pollution Control Board in a gala ceremony in its plant on Wednesday. Mr Ashok Tripathi, General Manager (IR & HR), Mr P A Mishra, General Manager (Engineering), Office bearers of BAL Employees Union and other officials were present during the occasion.

“BAL is committed in leading, educating and spreading environmental initiatives to all our stakeholders. As the theme for this year’s World Environment Day – Think, Eat, Save – we are committed to reduce and save the resources for our next generation by reducing the waste through our improved processes,” said Mr Varma.

Most people tend to think of food waste as not having an adverse impact on the environment because it is biodegradable. However, most food waste ends up in landfill where it creates methane, a greenhouse gas with 25 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide (CO2). Every time we throw food into the bin we're also discarding the vast amounts of resources, energy and water that it took to produce, process, store, refrigerate, transport and cook our food. “While we have been advising our employees to reduce the food wastes; we are also pursuing aggressively the effort of plantation this year also and will plant around 30,000 trees. We are in the process of involving various other agencies  as we believe that environmental protection will not only benefit us all but will benefit our future generation also” Mr Varma added.
